Strath Cottage -
Ullapool Ullapool is a picturesque
highland fishing village on the north west coast
of Scotland.

We are approximately 55 miles (1 hour) north
of Inverness and ideally placed for people
wishing to explore the Highlands and Islands of
the west coast.
Ullapool itself was built by the British
Fisheries Society in 1788, the original part of
the village having been designed by Thomas
Telford. The original shore front and streets he
designed have now been designated a conservation
area, which includes Strath Cottage.
Whilst retaining the charm of its original
design and purpose, Ullapool now offers a range
of facilities for visitors and locals. We have
modern shopping outlets along with a vast range
of craft and local retail shops. We also have a
considerable number of
bars and restaurants, many of which serve
award winning local produce and put on a vast
amount of music and cultural events. This can
range from artists and musicians in the pubs and
clubhouses within a few minutes walk from the
cottage, to the local festival
Loopallu in the campsite behind us and the Ullapool Guitar Festival which takes place
throughout the village.
The village is nestled on a sheltered natural
harbour in Loch Broom. The location has had
settlements dating back thousands of years - the
view across the loch is to Dun Lagaidh, a
Pictish fort - and the name Ullapool is derived
from the Norse
‘Ulla-Bolstadr’ meaning ‘Ulla's steading’,
evidence of the Viking influence.

The hills, mountains and lochs
surrounding the village offer the opportunity to
walk, climb, explore and fish. Fishing permits,
and walking guides can all be found in the
village, or you may wish to just drive about and
see some of the best unspoilt scenery in the
world.
Those seeking further
activities will find no lack of choice around
the village. The
ferry to Lewis leaves the harbour and passes
the front door of the cottage. This can be taken
for trips and excursions to Lewis and the
Hebrides. There are also two local boats running
trips in Loch Broom and to the Summer Islands -
see
The Summer Queen and
Seascape sites for further information.

The village also offers a
museum, a leisure centre and swimming pool, a
nine-hole golf course,
Highland Stoneware Pottery, beaches and walks. Within a few miles drive
there are also attractions such as
Corrieshalloch Gorge (the highest waterfall
in Scotland),
Leckmelm Gardens,
Lael Forest and Ardmair Bay. Driving north,
you can visit the village of
Achiltibuie and the
Hydropodium, or take a day trip to
Lochinver, taking in the Ardvreck Castle
ruins on your way.

Whilst you might run out of time, you won't
run out of things to do!
"A great village,
with lots to do and see, hope to visit again
next year." - Pascal Pillot, Landernau, France
